Every evaluation begins with a consultation to discuss concerns, background information, and the questions you hope to answer through the assessment process. Depending on the referral concerns, information may be gathered through interviews, review of learning history, rating scales, and standardized testing. Results are then carefully analyzed and integrated into a comprehensive written report. A feedback meeting is scheduled to review findings, answer questions, and discuss individualized recommendations and next steps. The evaluation process is collaborative, personalized, and designed to provide meaningful insight into the individual's strengths, challenges, and support needs.
-
The timeline varies depending on the scope of the evaluation. Most comprehensive evaluations are completed over several sessions and include time for scoring, interpretation, report writing, and a feedback meeting.
-
Many schools, colleges, and testing agencies accept private evaluations. However, acceptance of recommendations, accommodations, eligibility determinations, or services is ultimately determined by the receiving institution.
-
School districts can provide evaluations at no cost to families when there is a suspected disability that may impact a student's access to education. These evaluations are conducted to help determine eligibility for special education services and to inform educational planning within the school setting.
Private evaluations may offer a broader assessment of learning, development, attention, social-emotional functioning, and other areas of concern. Families often seek private evaluations when they would like an independent perspective, a more comprehensive understanding of their child, diagnostic clarification, or recommendations that extend beyond the school environment.
Both school-based and private evaluations can provide valuable information. The most appropriate option depends on the individual's needs, goals, and referral questions.
If you are unsure whether a school evaluation, private evaluation, or Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is the best fit for your situation, I would be happy to discuss your options during a complimentary consultation.
